Seven Unreleased Tracks On Boxed Set
You were told on this site back a week ago that when the information on the upcoming Dolly boxed set from Sony/Legacy was ready to come out that you wouldn't be disappointed, and I wager that after reading this you won't be. The label announced to the world Monday via a press release that in addition to 21 of her record 25 No. 1 country singles, the collection titled simply Dolly will boast half of her charted duets with Porter Wagoner, her Goldband recordings, a previously unreleased demo with her uncle Bill Owens, both sides of her 1962 Mercury single plus an unreleased song from that same recording session, a previously unreleased Monument single from her Ray Stevens-produced pop sessions of November 1965 that resulted in "Don't Drop Out" (one of my all-time favorite Dolly tracks, also included on the set), and four previously unreleased RCA recordings: a 1969 version of "Everything Is Beautiful (In Its Own Way)," which she had previously recorded but not released on Monument a couple of years earlier; a 1971 take on "God's Coloring Book," which she would re-record and release six years later; and 1972 recordings of "Eugene, Oregon" and "What Will Baby Be," the latter of which she re-recorded and released two decades later. It will also feature an extensive 60-page booklet with rare photos, memorabilia, an introduction by Laura Cantrell and liner notes by Holly George-Warren. Practically within minutes of the press release being posted to the website of the label's publicist Monday evening, CMT.com was the first to report a brief about it here. Fans Shell Out $75,000 For Dolly Meals
Congratulations to Dolly megafans Sabrina Taylor and Tabitha Hall of Gatlinburg – and condolences to their checking account – for placing the winning bid for Dolly's contribution to this year's Evening of Elegance fund-raising auction to benefit the Dr. Robert F. Thomas Foundation: a whopping $75,000 donation over the weekend to win her "5 To 9" prize package. Donors came as far as from Scotland to try and take home the right for one couple to arrive at 5 p.m. at Dolly's legendary Tennessee Mountain Home, enjoy a private tour of the house (with 10 additional guests) followed by a barbeque and bluegrass concert hosted by Dolly, spend the night in Dolly's adjacent guest house (just the two winners), and have Dolly prepare and serve them breakfast the next morning at 9 a.m. But Tabby and Sabrina beat them all with their record-breaking bid, making them responsible for more than half of the $140,000 raised at the event. "We're absolutely humbled by Dolly's remarkable donation and Tabitha and Sabrina's overwhelming generosity.  These three remarkable ladies surpassed our greatest expectations for this year's event," said event organizer Amy Kingery.  "It's even better knowing that the people of Sevier County will enjoy the benefits of their contributions to the Dr. Robert F. Thomas Foundation through improved health care in our area."  Dolly serves as honorary chairperson of the Foundation, which promotes healthcare in Sevier County, Tenn., and was named for the country missionary doctor who delivered her in January 1946.

'9 To 5' Still Low On List
Things aren't looking up for Dolly's 9 to 5: The Musical, the Aug. 11-16 grosses released Monday confirmed. The audience for the week was down 6 percent compared to the previous week, falling to 8,837 ticketholders, and the average per-ticket price slipped 1 percent to $74.86, resulting in a 7 percent decrease in the week's gross, $661,572. The percent of seats sold fell to 69 percent, giving it the smallest percentage of sold seats on Broadway for the second week in a row. The musical dropped two places to No. 17 for biggest Broadway gross out of the 21 shows on the Great White Way and remained steady at No. 13 for audience size. Since opening for previews, the show has grossed $13.4 million and been seen by 192,358 people.

CNN International Reminder
Don't forget if your cable system carries CNN International to tune in (or set your DVR) for 4:30 a.m. Eastern U.S. time (9:30 a.m. British Summer Time) Wednesday morning to catch the premiere of its Revealed episode profiling Dolly. If that's too early for you, it repeats at 18:30 British time (1:30 p.m. U.S.) and will be available for online streaming from the network's website here after broadcast. As was first reported here, the show follows Dolly on tour, at photo shoots, to speeches, around Dollywood, during her Dolly Parade and at other performances. Special events captured include her honorary degree ceremony from the University of Tennessee Knoxville and announcement in Atlanta of Rotary International's partnership with her Imagination Library, about which she says during the show: "I am like an over exaggerated character, not just to kids but to other people. But with kids they get me. They like it, they feel they can come up to me like Mickey Mouse and be part of that."
Frequent duet partner Kenny Rogers is also interviewed, observing: "Dolly is liberating – she is so herself, she makes everyone else feel that they have the right to be themselves." More Dolly Details From The Park
Dolly's remarks at the 75th anniversary re-dedication of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park will focus on her love of the Smokies, it was announced over the weekend, and she will also perform two selections from her fund-raising CD for the park, Sha-Kon-O-Hey!. Others just announced as participating in the Sept. 2 private event for 2,000 invited guests include the Gatlinburg-Pittman High School band and Swain County, N.C., high school band as well as a special Cherokee blessing by Jerry Wolfe. 'I'll Take 'Dolly' For $1,000, Alex'
Thanks to Chris for alerting me that a weekend broadcast of Jeopardy on Saturday again featured a Dolly answer. The $400 clue under "They Said It" was "This country star said 'I am not offended by dumb blonde jokes because I know I'm not dumb....and I know I'm definitely not blonde!" The audience erupted in laughter and then a contestant buzzed in with "Who is Dolly Parton?"

Aug. 15:
Dolly Back On Irish Tally
It's been two months since she was on the top 100 pop albums chart in Ireland, but the 2007 compilation The Very Best Of Dolly Parton, Vol. 1 returns this week to the Irish chart to sit at No. 65 in its 84th week since release.

Iowa Gets Another Library
Cherokee County, Iowa, is the latest to kick off a chapter of Dolly's Imagination Library literacy program, The Chronicle Times reported here Friday. Dolly's program provides one free, age-appropriate, expert-selected book every month to any child birth to age 5 in more than 1,100 participating communities in the U.S., Canada and U.K. The project has distributed more than 20 million books since inception.

'9 To 5' CD Stumbles Out Of Some Charts
As was expected in its second week of wide release, the original Broadway cast album of Dolly's 9 to 5: The Musical score looses considerable ground in the Aug. 22 Billboard charts released Thursday. The CD slips just three to No. 6 in its fourth week on the cast albums chart (its first two weeks there were due to early sales from two websites and paid downloads from most digital retailers), but it falls off of the 25-position Internet sales albums chart, down from No. 14, and the 200-position pop albums and comprehensive albums charts, down from No. 130 and No. 160, respectively. It spent just one week on each of those tallies. It also falls back off of the 50-position independent label albums chart, down from No. 16 in its second week there (with its first week again being due to the early sales). Steve Martin's The Crow - New Songs for the 5-String Banjo, with a Dolly duet, remains steady at No. 1 bluegrass in its 25th week. Brad Paisley's Time Well Wasted, featuring Dolly on "When I Get Where I'm Going," rises one to No. 6 country catalog and three to No. 36 Canadian country. Sugarland's LIVE On The Inside CD/DVD combo debuts at No. 1 country and pop with 76,000 units sold in its first week, while the self-titled debut from Gloriana debuts at No. 2 country, No. 3 pop.

Dolly In Paul Remembrances
Guitar innovation legend Les Paul passed away Thursday at the age of 94. His death brought a couple of Dolly mentions thanks to an Associated Press photo of her and Freddie Fender presenting Grammy Awards in 1977 to Paul and Chet Atkins. Latest From Stern
Thanks to Al for updating me on the latest installment of "As Howard Stern Turns" :) The radio host on Thursday once again brought up Dolly, this time saying that she is the nicest person out there, only seeing the good in people. He cited as evidence that she wrote a song about how much she hates him for a joke he played on her but couldn't bring herself to release it, although he said he is very happy he'll get to see the lyrics. He added that he thinks she is beautiful and talented and really means it. Sidekick Robin Quivers jumped in to say she went to see 9 to 5: The Musical Wednesday night and was amazed at Dolly's talent writing all of the songs and making them appropriate for the characters. Stern added that the show's star, Allison Janney, had a small role in his autobiographical film Private Parts.

Aug. 13:
No Obama For Smokies Event
The White House confirmed Wednesday that the president will not make it to the 75th anniversary rededication of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, which will feature Dolly as the event's international ambassador. Added the list of dignitaries, though, are Cherokee Chief Michele Hicks and Governors Phil Bredesen of Tennessee and Bev Perdue of North Carolina. Read more from TV stations WBIR here and WATE here.

Video Press Release Makes AP
Dolly's "Change It" music video snagged some coverage from the Associated Press Wednesday based on a press release issued Tuesday about the video. The AP reports are noted here and here, and the press release reads: "Dolly Parton has released a video for the song 'Change It' from the Original Broadway Cast Recording of 9 to 5: The Musical album--and it's Dolly like you've never seen before: behind-the-scenes, doing photo shoots, working on her computer and even playfully shaving a photographer's head.  This version of the song, with Dolly on lead vocals, was originally released exclusively via iTunes, but has been added as a bonus track to the musical's CD. See it here. Filmed on location at a Nashville studio in July, the 'Change It' video shows Dolly doing a photo shoot with a plethora of outfit changes and guitars and in the studio recording vocals and working on the lyrics and audio mix.  She's also seen working at her computer going over graphic designs and having fun with her team, including photographer Fran Strine, whose head Dolly shaves and makes a mess of. The Original Broadway Cast Recording of 9 to 5: The Musical album is Dolly Records' second release (the label released Dolly's acclaimed Backwoods Barbie CD last year) and is produced by Stephen Oremus and Dolly Parton.  Alex Lacamoire (music director and co-orchestrator for the Grammy winning original cast recording of In The Heights) is co-producer, and the album was recorded and mixed by Frank Filipetti.  The Broadway version of the musical is set to travel the country next year."

CNN International Show Coming Next Week
It's now less than a week before the broadcast of CNN International's Revealed episode about Dolly, premiering 9:30 a.m. British Summer Time (4:30 a.m. Eastern U.S.) next Wednesday. In the States, although the channel is not carried by satellite providers DISH Network or Direct TV, it is available from many cable systems, including most Time Warner franchises. Also, the episode will be available for online viewing from the network's website worldwide after airing. Aug. 12:
Dolly Awaits Word From Obama
Whether President Obama will share the stage with Dolly at the Sept. 2 rededication of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park has yet to be decided, according to a story Tuesday from The Knoxville News Sentinel here. Official word of whether or not the president will be in attendance has not been released, but Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar, who is in charge of the national park system, will be there. Also, the head of Friends of the Smokies said others participating will be Dolly, the four senators from Tennessee and North Carolina and most of the area's congressmen. As you may recall, Dollymania was the first to report back in June that Dolly had said she would participate in the ceremony in her role as the park's 75th anniversary international ambassador. In sad news for fans, though, the event is expected to be closed to the public, as it will be limited to approximately 2,000 invited guests, resulting in closure of the main road through the national park, the Newfound Gap Road, from sunset Sept. 1 through the afternoon of Sept. 2. The official announcement isn't available yet (should be coming soon!) for the upcoming Dolly boxed set from Sony Records to hit stores Oct. 27, but Dollymania has confirmed that the release will contain four discs, not the three that Amazon.com was showing on its advance order page. CD, DVD Cover Art Posted
Dolly's record label website, DollyPartonMusic.net, on Tuesday released to fans the images of Dolly's upcoming Live In London CD and DVD, although the cover art has been made available to PBS stations for several weeks since they've been selling advance copies of both as fund-raisers associated with the abbreviated television concert special from the recording. Dolly V. Stern, Round Three
Thanks to Al and Marie for telling me that Howard Stern's producers announced on his show Tuesday that Dolly's management had informed them she has changed her mind and will send him the lyrics to the song she wrote about him in retaliation for an offensive audio joke at her expense. Reportedly, Stern said on his program he loves her, is happy he'll be able to hear what she wrote and that he thinks she's still gorgeous "for an old broad." No word yet on when she plans to turn over the lyrics.

'Change It' Video Premieres

'9 To 5' Goes Up And Down
Results for the week of Aug. 4-9 on Dolly's 9 to 5: The Musical were mixed, the grosses that came out Monday showed. On the good side, the weekly audience was up 8 percent compared to the previous week, coming in at 9,399 ticketholders, so even with the average per-ticket price dropping 1 percent to $75.80 the week's gross rose 7 percent to $712,415. The bad news was that even though the percent of seats sold rose from 68 percent the previous week to 73 percent, for the first time since opening the show had the lowest percentage of sold seats on Broadway. The musical actually rose one spot to No. 15 for biggest Broadway gross and remained steady at No. 13 for audience size. Since opening for previews, the show has grossed $12.7 million and been seen by 183,521 people.

More 'London' Sightings
Dollymania has confirmed a few additional airings of Dolly: Live In London O2 Arena on PBS networks for you. Mississippi Public Broadcasting will show the concert at 9 p.m. Tuesday, followed by repeats at 12:30 p.m. Sunday and 9:30 p.m. Aug. 20. It will be shown at 8 p.m. Aug. 20 on both Gainesville, Fla., station WUFT and as a repeat on Maryland Public Television's WMPT-DT2. You may recall it first reported here that Maryland Public Television was the first in the world to show the special, airing it the first night it became available to public television. Scroll through previous updates to see if a station in your viewing area has been identified as carrying the show.

Stern Getting On Dolly Again
Thanks to Marie for alerting me that Dolly once again made The Howard Stern Show Monday. (You may recall that several months ago he caused quite an outcry when he created a joke on his show where he spliced together excerpts from the audiobook version of her autobiography from more than a decade ago to make it sound like she was making several raunchy and racist remarks on air, but Dolly didn't find it amusing and released a statement saying she was very much hurt and would consider suing over the incident. Shortly thereafter, she said she was writing a song called "Howard Stern" about the event and might record it. This led Stern's staff to speak with her management and confirm the song was being written, to which Stern said at the time he was certain it wouldn't be "a love fest" but he still considered her an amazing songwriter and was honored to be immortalized in song by her.) Well, the update from Stern's camp is that Dolly's management confirmed to them that she decided not to finish the song and not to record it, so he's disappointed and wants to get a clip of the verses she wrote about him, although she has thus far refused to release them.

New Sony Boxed Set Coming In Oct.
Retailers over the weekend revealed that a yet-to-be-titled three-CD Dolly boxed set is scheduled for release on Oct. 27 from Sony Legacy. If this is the project I think it is, trust me that you won't be disappointed when it hits stores. Reserve your copy, for $50 each, here !

Three Live Tracks On New CD
Speaking of new releases, thanks to Tony for alerting me to Rare Country Legends Live, a new three-disc set from Jim Owens Entertainment which features Dolly performances of "My Tennessee Mountain Home," "Touch Your Woman" and "The Last Thing On My Mind" with Porter Wagoner. Its order page here states that the recordings are taken live from the stage of the Grand Ole Opry (although it doesn't actually state that they occurred on the Opry itself, so these may be tracks from other events recorded at the Opry House).

Steady Down Under
The Very Best Of Dolly Parton, Vol. 1, her overseas Sony compilation CD from two years ago, remains steady this week at No. 6 again in its 34th week on the Australian country albums chart, it was announced.

'People' Offers Free Dolly Track
Wanna download Dolly's "Backwoods Barbie" free from iTunes? Well, she's one of eight artists whose songs were selected for the PEOPLE Country Playlist to promote the annual country music issue of the magazine. The list also includes Jack Ingram, Willie Nelson, Darryl Worley and others. Access the codes for the free downloads here. The magazine itself, dated September, hit newsstands nationwide on Friday and features Reba on the cover with an interview that includes a look inside her home. Other stars who opened their domiciles for the publication include frequent Dolly duetter Kenny Rogers along with Darius Rucker, Gretchen Wilson, Holly Williams and Jimmy Wayne. Latest On '9 To 5'
The New York Post is doing its part to try and sell some tickets to Dolly's 9 to 5: The Musical. In its weekly run-down of what's playing on Broadway, it gave the show three-out-of-four stars here and opined: "Don't listen to the haters: This revenge fantasy is a hoot, Allison Janney rocks, and Dolly Parton's songs were made for the musical theater." In related news, Knoxville News Sentinel columnist Terry Morrow presents recent interviews with Dolly and cast member Megan Hilty in a story about the show here this week.

A Few More 'London' Showings
Additional public television stations are gearing up in coming days to show Dolly: Live In London O2 Arena. The new ones uncovered by Dollymania are Fargo, N.D.-based Prairie Public Television at 3 a.m. Saturday, WKNO-2 Memphis at 8:30 p.m. Saturday (it had aired there on WKNO-1 Wednesday night), 9:30 p.m. Wednesday on WQED in Pittsburgh, Pa., and 8 p.m. Thursday on Connecticut Public Television. '9 To 5' Rebounds On Charts
As was expected with the first week's sales in regular retail outlets, the cast album of Dolly's 9 to 5: The Musical score produced a sizeable jump on the charts, the August 15 Billboard numbers confirmed Thursday. As was previously reported, the collection debuts at No. 130 pop albums. In addition, it climbs nine spots in its third week on the cast albums chart to a new peak at No. 3 and re-enters the 50-position independent label albums chart for a second week and a new peak of No. 16. It also debuts on the Internet sales albums chart at No. 14 and comes in at No. 160 on the comprehensive albums tally. The CD will likely see a significant drop in next week's numbers, since sales typically spike on an album's wide release date. Steve Martin's The Crow - New Songs for the 5-String Banjo, with its Dolly collaboration, remains steady at No. 1 bluegrass in its 24th week. Brad Paisley's Time Well Wasted, featuring Dolly on "When I Get Where I'm Going," slides one to No. 7 country catalog and falls six to No. 39 Canadian country. Taylor Swift's Fearless remains steady at No. 1 country and No. 9 pop in its 38th chart week with 38,000 units moved while The Zac Brown Band's The Foundation also remains steady at No. 2 country and No. 11 pop in its 37th week.

DVD Release Date Moves, New Video Coming
The release date for Dolly's upcoming live DVD and CD Live In London has been moved up one month to October instead of the previously-announced November shelf date, according to an e-mail blast issued Thursday by her official record label website, DollyPartonMusic.net. The message also noted that a music video for her single "Change It" from the Tony-nominated score of 9 To 5: The Musical will soon be posted on the website using footage taken from Dolly's recording of the tune as well as a recent photo shoot. Aug. 6:
'9 To 5' To Be No. 130 Pop
As was predicted here, Dolly's 9 To 5: The Musical original Broadway cast recording album will shoot up the charts quite a bit when they are released Thursday to reflect the first week of sales in retail stores. Dolly's record label website, DollyPartonMusic.net, reported Wednesday that the CD will debut on the Billboard Top 200 pop albums chart at No. 130. Given that position, it will likely be around No. 2 on the Cast Albums chart (the No. 1 spot is a remote possibility) and somewhere in the mid-20s on the independent label albums chart. The collection debuted at No. 4 Cast Albums and No. 39 indie two weeks ago based solely on its early release via the online stores at Dolly's record label site and the musical's official website as well as digital download release on all of the major legal downloading services. Last week, it dipped to No. 12 Cast Albums and fell out of the top 50 indie CDs.

Dolly To Be Recognized Sept. 22
Lee Ann Womack will host the Sept. 22 ceremony in Nashville where Dolly will be honored with the Academy of Country Music's Jim Reeves International Award, the Academy announced in a press release Wednesday. The event, to be held at the Schermerhorn Symphony building, recognizes the off-camera winners from this year's awards including Pioneer Award winners Kenny Rogers, Randy Travis, Hank Williams Jr. and Jerry Reed, among others. The award was her ninth career win from the ACM.

Film Series To Show 'For The Love'
If you're in New York the first week of September, you might want to take in "Mondo Fandom," a series of obsessed fan documentaries being shown Sept 3-6 by the Anthology Film Archives in its Second Avenue Courthouse building in Manhattan. The series will include the fan doc For The Love Of Dolly at 7:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. Sept. 5 complete with director Tai Uhlmann present for discussion.

'9 To 5' Tumbles A Little
Announcing last week that it would close Labor Day weekend apparently didn't help move more tickets for Dolly's 9 to 5: The Musical, the grosses for the week of July 28-Aug. 2 released on Monday indicated. Attendance, 8,702 audience members, was down 3 percent compared to the previous week, with the percentage of seats filled dipping to 68 percent, for the third week in a row the second-lowest sale percentage on Broadway. The overall gross, $665,102, was down 4 percent from the week before, as the per-ticket average dipped 1 percent to $76.43. The show remained steady at No. 16 for biggest Broadway gross and No. 13 for audience size. Since opening for previews, the show has grossed $12 million and been seen by 174,122 people.

Skaggs Set With Dolly Re-Issued
An album with a couple of classic Dolly guest vocals is in stores once again. Ricky Skaggs' 1983 recording Don't Cheat In Our Hometown on Epic/Sugar Hill has been re-issued by his Skaggs Family Records. The collection includes two tracks with Dolly harmonies: "Vision Of Mother" and "Don't Step Over An Old Love." The new version also includes a bonus DVD of Skaggs discussing the recording of the album. Get your copy, available on CD for the first time since a 1990 re-issue, here!

Latest 'London' TV Additions
I've come across several additional airings this week of the Dolly: Live In London O2 Arena special. It aired Sunday in Denver, although there is a 7 p.m. Tuesday repeat. It aired Monday in Tallahassee and also on New Mexico PBS (which will repeat it Aug. 7 and 17 on its 9.1 World channel). Other new broadcasts include 7 p.m. Tuesday on South Dakota Public Broadcasting, 8 p.m. Tuesday on Milwaukee Public Television, 7:30 p.m. Wednesday on Vegas PBS, 8:30 p.m. Thursday and Friday on Bowling Green's WKYU, 8 p.m. Saturday on central California's KVIE and noon and 7 p.m. Sunday on northern California's KQED. Florida Library Ceases Registrations
Sometimes you can be just too successful. That's what organizers of the Tampa-area chapter of Dolly' s Imagination Library literacy program have discovered. An influx of registering children forced them to stop accepting new kids into the free book project until new funding is secured. Current registrants, more than 11,000 of them, will continue to receive books, however, The St. Petersburg Times reports here.

Holding On In Aussie Tally
The Very Best Of Dolly Parton, Vol. 1, her overseas Sony compilation CD from two years ago, remains steady this week at No. 6 in its 33rd week on the Australian country albums chart, it was announced.

'Angel' Flies Again
Unlikely Angel, Dolly's 1996 holiday film, is being re-issued once again on DVD, it has been announced. The new release is coming Oct. 20 from Tango Entertainment. Reserve your copy here!
